[This wasn't her cup of tea, and Max hadn't really bothered to change her usual dress code to something more feminine or distinguished or anything else of the sort. The most she'd done was tie her hair back, and she thought that was effort enough. Currently she was busy cramming herself into a corner of the room with her back to the wall and managing to look pissed off and bored all at once.

The pushy servants around town had 'encouraged' her attendance until she'd given in with a graceless shriek of annoyance and stomped her way to the entrance. Since then time had been spent trying to blend and pointedly ignoring anything edible. Even if Dai hadn't provided, Max would have suspected some kind of tampering and wasn't in the habit of eating food she hadn't seen prepared anyway.]

You look as if you are enjoying yourself, Miss.

[Considering her position in the area, he really had no choice but to approach her head on. Unlike her, he'd at least taken a drink, well accustomed to Dai's fondness for parties and... pretty sure that he wouldn't dare tamper with the food if he was trying to win these people over.

But, nevermind that, he can understand her issue with the entire situation, food and drink included. Although it's quite possible she's never seen him before, he's changed to a suit and tie and does look well the part of someone attending a formal dinner.]

I'm assuming your presence was... strongly encouraged?

[The entire time it took the man to approach her was marked with a suspicious narrowing of the eyes. She casually slid out of the corner and faced him at what she felt was a less vulnerable point, arms remaining crossed as Max offered up a cross between a shrug and a humorless laugh.]

No, I skipped right in. I'm hoping they'll nominate me for homecoming queen.

[With a drink in hand and well-fitted attire, she rather felt like a hooligan in his presence. But then that was usually her part anyway, so Max allowed a quick smile. Being on sarcastic autopilot, however, she couldn't help the way it leaned more into a smirk.

It disappeared just as quickly.]

You're one of them, right?

[A small nod given with a small wry smile. Her sense of humor is welcome, considering the situation.

Although he's more here by choice, he was still somewhat held up with his back to the wall on it.]

I am. How many of us have you met?

You're the second that I know of.

[With Dai being the only other, the hopelessly social creep that she thought he was.]

And seeing as you don't have an army of tortured souls crawling after you that I've noticed, you've got my vote.

[Which was about as nice as she could manage to be towards a stranger of his station and in such a setting. She looked him over and smiled.]

Unless you magically crammed them all into your pocket.

[He smiles at that, giving a small shake of his head.]

I'm afraid I don't have... ... ah, quite the relationship skills necessary for something like that.

[He takes a sip of his drink, looking over to Dai through the glass of his drink, the red liquid splashing a light hue on a slightly distorted, but otherwise clear, image.]

And certainly not the magical ones to hide them, if I did. [He nodded to one of the lifeless looking individuals still hanging around the altar.]

Tell me, what is your familiar?

I'm pretty bad at being an abusive tyrant too. Guess we missed out.

[She followed his stare and frowned at the sight of the fire magister, but dragged her eyes back to Caim when he spoke again.]

I still don't get this whole familiar thing. What's it matter, are some cooler than others? [That unintentionally rude little spark, which is more the result of poor upbringing than intent. She paused a second and looked at him regretfully, confinement leading to boredom, which in turn led to something almost playful.]

Would you stop talking to me if I told you it was a dodo? Cool kids don't get dodos.

[Amused, Caim repeats the familiar's identity.] A dodo, is it? [How cute. Caim doesn't say it, but he's a sucker for cute things. So, no, Max, he won't stop talking to you just because it's a Dodo.]

They do take on rather odd shapes in their defense forms. Doesn't that one friend of yours-the older looking one-have a little penguin?

But, ah, I should have been more specific. Its element. Do you know what it is, yet? [Considering she seems to only know it's a Dodo might indicate to him that she doesn't, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Might be time to give a small explanation of what the familiars are there for.]

[If she'd taken any food she'd have choked on it. His taking her joke seriously brought her to laugh, and she covered her mouth to stifle the giggles and clear her throat.]

No, it's not a dodo! I was yanking your chain. It's just a pair of metal whats-its, but…I've seen them turn into something else before.

[She paused thoughtfully at that, as well musing over his question. A penguin? Oh, he must mean-]

Captain Snuggles? [As Heine had the unfortunate position of, well, knowing Max, and she had a bad habit of dishing out bad nicknames his poor penguin. The thought made her glance around the ballroom. Speaking of, the albino had to be around somewhere. Probably shooting at something.]

Nope. Its element could be materialism and I wouldn't be the wiser.

I hope I'm okay to butt in up in here? :'' redeify November 7 2011, 21:01:05 UTC
[ it was a tough life, being so gravely misunderstood. he could almost feel the agitation and worry in the room, and it was less of a party than a place to pace and wait for a disaster to fall. maybe that was the sort of reaction one should expect from aggressive peer pressure and surreptitious, under-handed scheming, but. as far as dai was concerned, he just felt a bit hard done-by.

he watched max skulk in and wedge herself into the corner for a little, watched as caim drifted to greet her. but it was a little longer before he decided to disrupt them - roughly around the mark where caim started smiling. purely coincidentally.

he slipped up without any effort at subtlety, quite sure caim wouldn't simply abandon max to avoid him. ]

- Will you help her find out? [ he smiled, situating himself to look at them both steadily. smile smile. nothing weird about being an enthusiastic host, was there? ] That would be awfully kind of you, Caim.

[ He looked purely surprised when she told him otherwise, having been completely and easily convinced it was a dodo. The stifled giggle might have given it away before she said anything, but he seemed completely oblivious until she stated such.

Captain Snuggles. If he was going to smile at that it faded far too quickly, particularly since it was delayed by Max's statement of not knowing the element. Around that time came what Caim probably had wanted least tonight, and he stared at Dai only a moment on his interruption before looking off and to the side. ]

That's something she will have to find out for herself. [ His words held a cold bite to them, suddenly, and Caim shifted, his eyes covered by the strands of his hair but he didn't make a move to back off or leave. It was true. He wasn't just about to turn and walk away from Max leaving her with Dai, but it probably wasn't hard to imagine that it probably had crossed his mind momentarily.]

[Her guard shot back up at full force upon Dai's appearance. The smile vanished and she looked between the two, Caim's sudden coldness unsurprising but intriguing all the same. Clearly they weren't bff's. Which shifted her overall opinion on Caim by a fraction.

Looking up at Dai Max frowned. She was in a decidedly unpleasant mood and really hated being the short one, but was willing to be civil, partly because he was a little unsettling. Dai was the gracious host, after all, and had sacrificed the time to come over and educate. Supposedly.

Plus they'd sparked her interest.]

She wouldn't mind getting a clue. [She glanced at Caim. He wasn't the only one who was just barely above taking off, but his decision to stay sort of made her the not-running-away buddy.] Unless this is the super awkward part where I'm supposed to slip away and let you two duke it out on the dance floor.

[ oh, his laughter is sincere and hearty - as though he's oblivious to the sudden frigid atmosphere, or is at least damn well determined not to let it blacken the atmosphere. ] 'Duke it out'? Goodness. Please be assured, it's really not that kind of party. I invited everyone because this is a peaceful affair, and I wanted everyone to have a good time. Things have been rough enough, recently, and further trauma is the last thing anyone wants.

[ he glances at caim, his gaze unreadable when he sees the way his face is turned, and then he looks away, glancing through the room while he sips his drink, slowly. after a while, as he damps his lip, he looks back to max. ]

One can normally tell by the abilities it demonstrates. You said they turned into something, before?

[If he notices Dai looking at him, he doesn't make it known, only turning his attention to Max when Dai has finally looked away and asks Max the question. He presses his lips together in a thin line, unsure if he should say anything, perhaps to deter the girl from answering the other. He admittedly isn't comfortable with Dai speaking with any of the foreigners, however, and decides he'll keep his opinions to himself for now and simply listen to how the conversation will unfold.]

[She gave Dai a funny look at the mentioning of recent trauma amongst the people, but let it slide, because so far he wasn't easily annoyed and there was little point in trying to push his buttons just then anyway. Her curiosity stumped her attitude, but for a second she was caught between the very subtle and perhaps even unintentional hints of warning emanating from Caim and wanting to know about the thing that followed her, and how to bend it to her advantage.]

Yeah. [Her answer is slow and unsure, but with a frown she tears her gaze away from Caim and looks back to Dai. Fuck, it was like being the confused kid between the divorcing parents.] It was like a big white raptor. It was only for a minute, though, nothing really…happened.

[Because it had not needed to, because her victim had not fought back, and it wasn't something she wanted to go into depth about.]

[ he could feel caim's presence in the conversation more than he looked at him, and certainly more than he heard him - utterly silent as he was. what kind of face was he making? was it troubling to see him just engaging in something as leisurely as this? there was no way he wouldn't disapprove.

caim had always been bad at giving up on things he'd 'claimed' for himself, dai supposed. maybe this was no different. no doubt he genuinely thought dai would be some awful, corrupting influence if he stood too close to max for too long, but, well... that's the risk of making choices for oneself, isn't it? getting hurt.

but a little chat never hurt anybody. ]

Ah, such a shame... And such an ambiguous creature, as well. [ only dai wasn't done on just that note - though not because he had any suspicions about the omission of information. after all, she only knew as much as she knew, didn't she?

it was all pure curiosity, at that point. ] It appeared, but didn't attack?... That's unusual for a familiar. Was it startled by something?
