Tony awards

Jun 11, 2007 13:03

The first thing I noticed, once they actually started airing the awards and I wasn't squinting at a tiny box on the computer, with a connexion that really cannot support streaming-video, for the red carpet bit, was how many of the people in the audience I recognised. This is contrary to the Academy awards, which I saw a bit of in a bar and knew almost no one. Funny.

The technical awards were not much unexpected, although I didn't think Spring Awakening should have taken book.  Score yes, but book? Bah!
I'm still trying to decide how I feel about Grey Gardens' costume win.  Yes the costumes were appropriate to the piece, and Little Edie's 2nd act outfits did lend something to her characterisation, but I didn't think they were spectacular enough for the award.  Mary Poppins costumes weren't bad (although I only saw the UK production, I'm assuming the NY was similar.  This was one of two categories where I thought Pirate Queen realy ought to have had the nom, that and set.  Although MP deserved the set win they got.

I didn't have a strong feeling about best acress in a play, although I would rather have liked Angela Lansbury to win becasue a) I saw her, and b) shes Angela Lansbury.  Julie White was hilairous though, in her speech, and I now want to go see her in a comedy.

Glad that Christine Ebersole got her award, we all knew she would, but there's always that moment of nail biting.  She definitely deserved it.

David Hyde Pierce was a nice surpirse, I didn't see Curtains, but a few of the people at the Tony party had and they thought he was fabulous.  I'm glad it was him rather than the SA boy.

Company, not a surprise for the revival win, though I wasn't impressed by the song they chose to perform. I love the song, but it was very subdued, and hello, lighting? Where was the lighting?  I'd have rather seen I'm Not Getting Married Today or You Could Drive a Person Crazy, or even the opening Bobby number, mroe people more energy. Raul was nomiated though, so I guess they chose one to show off his voice.  Eh. I'd still quite like to see it, but if I hadn't alreaydy been familiar, this number would not have make me want to go.

Spring Awakening's number was energetic, but msot of the people there, and a few I've talked to today, said it turned them off the idea of seeing it.  I like the Mama Who Bore Me number, but I wish they could have done Totally Fucked. I was one of only 2 people there who'd seen it, and really I wasn't that impressed. I'm going to call myself the wrong age-group and leave it at that.

By the time they'd won most of the other awards, I knew they were going to take Best Show, and I promptly started drinking so I wouldn't get upset. I was still hoping for Grey Gardens, but I'm realistic.  With 3 glasses of wine and no dinner in me, it was tolerable.

The Curtains number was good, looked like fun. Chorus Line had to do One, but I liked the way they worked it into the opening with the headshots, it was cool, but the people at the party who didnt' know Chorus Line needed it explained why they were all producing headshots. Then they thought it was cool.

Audra sang beautifully (doesn't she always?), looked great, and I still know very little about that show except to regret missing it.

Christine's number from GG was funny and fabulous. I'm nto sure who else could have pulled it off besides her. Yay Christine. I loved her in 42nd St and I love her more now.

And it was lovely to see the expected people. Bernadette looked great, Bebe looked great, Jane Krakowski was wonderful, as always,  Idina and Taye looked fab. Patti was very Patti, and John Mahoney was cool. Tommy Tune gave a nice touching speach about the recently departed, but we couldnt' read much of the list becasue ti wasn't zoomed in on.  I'm sure someone will post it later.

We recorded on my friends dvr, so I can go back and watch the numbers again.  I still have videos of Tonys from the mid 90s, and random other years, I should pull them out and watch them again. Or find a way to transfer the improtant bits to digital. I'm sure somoene knows how to do that.
