As the list of the dead was read out, he could barely stop himself from crying. Even though he’d helped put it together in the end, it still hurt to hear all the names being read.

In the end, they’d all become one family. Of course, as the number of hunters grew smaller, it was inevitable they’d all find each other and bond over their shared fate.

All the petty squabbles between hunters has been put to one side. People like Gordon Walker weren’t allowed to exist anymore.

“Joanna Beth Harvelle. Ellen Harvelle, Robert Steven Singer, Chuck Shirley, Rebecca Rosen-Shirley”

There were a few names he barely knew. Those who’d survived the war had all converged on Bobby’s old place (which was left to whoever wanted it) and started the arduous task of putting this horrible list together.

Most of the names were just those who’d been on the fringes and caught in the crossfire. Also, wherever possible, the hosts used by both sides were listed. They were as much a part of this as anyone, even if it wasn’t them at the controls.

He knew what was coming but as soon as he heard the names he’d been dreading, his resolve broke.

“Dean Winchester, Samuel Winchester, Castiel.”

John fell to his knees. His boys had found a way to bring him back to help fight the good fight only for them to be snatched away from him. Then there was Castiel, the being who took him to his boys and hid them for so long. He remembered how Castiel had sat for days looking over their dead bodies, standing guard over them until it was safe to bury them.

They’d both given up after that. Everyone did, even Michael and Lucifer. With their vessels dead and no way of getting them back, the final battle never happened and the world was restored to how it had been before the whole mess started.

But now, as he stood by the memorial in Kansas, he wept for the world he had lost.
