Why I hate conspiracy theories

Hot on the heels of the news of Osama bin Laden's killing by US Special Forces operatives, there's a new conspiracy theory which basically says that the US is lying. This is bullsh*t.

For those who doubt that ObL is really dead, consider this - all he has to do (if he's still alive) is release a picture or video of him holding one of those newspapers proclaiming his death to utterly destroy US credibility for all time. Thus, for the US government to take this step, there are three possibilities:
1. They really did "bag and tag" him.
2. They know he's dead, and they are certain that nobody else is going to recover his body.
3. They actively want to destroy US credibility.

Of these, the most likely scenario is #1. Conspiracy theorists aside, I find it difficult to believe #3, and #2 is too hard for them to be certain of. Even if he's really dead, if someone else produces a non-water-logged corpse it still puts the US story at false and thus destroys their credibility.

If you're going to have a conspiracy theory, at least be smart about it, okay?
