A few days back, I mentioned ACTA in passing. Looks like part of it has finally
leaked, and the news is not good. Basically, this "treaty" will supersede any national law and force a "Super DMCA" type of system into place to protect the rights of artists (or, more commonly, corporations) at the expense of the consumer. Cory Doctorow has a good
write-up, and Michael Geist is
all over it, as expected. Among other things, if you are accused (not even found guilty, mind you, but accused) of copyright infringement, your ISP may be required to cut your service off.
So, yeah, this "treaty" forces new obligations onto the signatories, strips us the consumers of rights without recompense, and makes the RIAA and MPAA types that much richer. Welcome to the 21st century.
