A boring Friday Night

I felt a little social yesterday. For the first time in several weeks, I wasn't working at KMUW during the day. I woke up early, hand-washed some sweaters, and set them out to dry on the porch on the laundry rack. Theodora (the geranium) and Edgar (the basil plant) also got a mini-vacation on the back porch for the afternoon. I cooked some Parmesan quinoa with veggies, made some coffee, and made merry.

In the afternoon, I worked a few hours at the Twin Lakes Who Foos, then took a bus down to the Y, where I pumped iron until Raymond finished work. We went home, and I tried to find "something to do" out with friends. My online research resulted in no places to go other than the usual bars and blockbusters movies.

So, Raymond and I stayed in. I made myself a grilled cheese and we caught a new episode of Grey's Anatomy and an episode of House. Raymond almost made it through the 9 o'clock Fox news report without getting angry. I didn't almost make it. Half of their "breaking" news stories already aired that afternoon (I saw them on a TV at the Y) and the other half were slanted, biased, puff pieces ("Did you know kids use cold medicine to get high?") After our TV binge, Raymond and I surfed online with our respective laptops for a while, and I turned in at a decent hour to wake up for radio today.

I feel a little jaded about my Wichita entertainment scene. Is there anything to do that doesn't involve going out to dinner, watching a movie, or watching the same 10 bands play a circuit of 4 bars? I check kmuw's events calendar, wichitabandscene.com, kansas.com/entertainment....nothing inspiring. It's January; finding a good assortment of entertainment is tough, I know. Here is my list of weekend things-to-do so far:

1. Road trip (though day trips work better than evening trips)
2. Coffee and/or drinks at some hip location with hip people
3. Checking out Oeno at a non-peak time
4. Free day at the Wichita Art Museum (Saturday afternoons only)
5. Final Friday Art Crawl (obviously only available on Final Fridays)
6. Some sort of theme dinner, planned at someone's home, like making home-made pizzas or margaritas, etc
7. Weekend thrifting with other thrifty chicks
8. Drunken checkers?
9. Sunday drive to Henry's Candy factory in Dexter. This is more available in warmer weather, but I guess car trips can happen any time.
10. Art night or photography night or dessert night....any theme night?
11. Thursday nights at N&Js (obviously on Thursdays)
12. Some magic band with dance-able music, at a good venue.

I'd like this list to include more "going out" kinds of items. Are there wonderful Wichita things I'm leaving out? Some little hidden things I don't know? Some gallery that stays open way late on Saturdays or some music venue with live opera/bluegrass/folk/Native American chants? Craft fairs? What's going on in January/February?

In a separate post, I am going to list a few "trips" and "events" I'd like to plan this month and next. I'd like your ideas on them before writing a Myspace blog about it (or a group e-mail.)
