On chickens

My friend, Ashley, is teaching English in Yaounde, Cameroon with the Peace Corps. She'll be done next summer. I just got an e-mail from her this morning, and, among other things, she shared some of her Thanksgiving plans with me:

For Thanksgiving I'm going to another volunteer's house. Jessica lives in a little village 21 km from my town so I'm gonna go there; Ben's coming, too. He's the only one of us that can cook. We tried to find a turkey, but the only place you can find one is in Yaounde and none of us wants to carry a live bird from here to Bokito. So we'll kill a chicken instead. I have no more remorse for chickens. we have what I suppose you could call "free-range" chickens all over my neighborhood and there's some satisfaction in going over to my neighbor's house and eating a chicken that I know has been shitting on my porch for 6 months. Also, I get very tired of chasing them out of my house. I had to chase two out of my bedroom once. I was really glad that I had my mosquito net, otherwise they would have gotten all over my bed.

I love Ashley so much! What a new way to think about "free-range." These African chickens are truly "organic."
