Stucky students get a taste of college life
Forty students from Stucky Middle School had an opportunity to learn about leadership and looking ahead to college during the Summer Leadership Program at Southwestern College in Winfield. Twenty students who recently completed sixth-grade and twenty incoming sixth-grade students attended the program June 27-29. The leadership program focused on how to be a student leader and how to make positive decisions during their middle school years.

The students also learned about college life by sleeping in the residence halls and participating in activities with current college students. They learned about the college admissions process, Pell Grants, ACT testing and how to plan for their future.

In 2006, Stucky and Southwestern College developed a unique partnership. One of the key highlights of the partnership is Stucky students who are admitted to Southwestern College after graduating high school will receive a $25,000 scholarship over four years. Stucky students also have mentors and tutors from Southwestern College. Stucky staff are professional mentors to Southwestern students who are going into the teaching profession and the school provides student teaching opportunities.

This was the first year the Summer Leadership Program was offered. The program was underwritten by a grant from Spirit Aerosystems.
