oops...an old post from Nov. 4

Wrote this offline a couple weeks ago, but forgot to post it...

Why I love living in the city:

7:30pm. I get home from work and begin to help Suzi with dinner...pasta. She's listening to The Magic Numbers and we start talking about how we really like the album, how I first heard of them off a podcast several months ago, and how she listened to them all the time on her recent trip to Italy. One song in particular, Hymn for Her, meant a lot to her. I start thinking how it would be fun to see them live. Then I remember - Kassie had seen a few weeks ago that they would be at PopScene this week, but I was supposed to be in Germany this week so I had filed away the date and forgotten all about it. I quickly check the website, and sure enough they are playing tonight. $5 cover. Doors at 9. We quickly continue making dinner, eat, and jump on the vespa to head down to PopScene. It was a rainy ride, but we make it OK. The line consists of 3 people. The Magic Numbers aren't playing until 11:30. We chat with the couple of people in front of us. They're from the UK, as is the band. I had heard that the band was huge in the UK. They tell us that it would cost $60 to see them in the UK. We're getting in for a $5 cover. Crazy. The place fills up over the next hour or so. Suzi and I have a nice conversation about why we (Brenner kids) turned out the way we did. No conclusions. Move on to relationships. Jobs. Life. Two beers later, the Webb Brothers, the opening band, starts. Never heard of them before. Reminds me of Sloan. Good sound. Good harmonies. Catchy refrains. They play for 45 minutes. 30 minute equipment change, then The Magic Numbers are on. The lead singer/guitarist and bass player are brother and sister, as are the drummer and other vocalist. Seems to be a family night. Solid sound. Energy. Joyous at times, poignant at others. They play through most of the songs on their only album and end with a new one, which concludes the show with a bang. Back on the vespa, it's raining even harder than before. We're soaked when we get back home. But it's worth it.
