Elizabeth's POV
“Breathe Dammit Major, BREATHE!” She held her breath while willing the man lying on the floor to come back to them, to her. She was the one who had wanted him to be on this mission. She had practically begged him to come with them on this improbable adventure and now that he was here, she didn’t know what she would do without him.
She exchanged a look with Teyla who was kneeling beside the Major. The strain was clearly written on the young woman’s face. Elizabeth knew that Teyla had no real understanding of the Medical procedures going on before her eyes, but she had trust in Carson to do his best to bring Sheppard back to them.
Major John Sheppard was headstrong and impulsive. In the short time he had been Elizabeth’s CO, they had already had a few heated discussions on the Wraith and how to handle their situation. He was the one who had wanted to head back to the planet to check out the Hive ship where their people had been held. The same ship where he had been forced to shoot one of the people he was trying to save. She knew that action weighed heavily on his mind. It had been with reluctance that she had agreed to the mission. Now she hoped that she didn’t regret that choice.
Rodney fidgeted beside her, causing her to turn to him. He looked more upset than she had ever seen him. She tries to comfort him with the fact that he got the Jumper back through the ‘Gate. “Well done Rodney!”
“We’ll see,” he states, eyes glued to the activity on the floor.
The tension in the small space is palpable. Two young faces watch from the sidelines as their new Commanding Officer fights for his life in front of them. They still don’t even know how close to death they had come.
Suddenly a beeping is heard from the Heart monitor. “We’ve got a pulse,” says Beckett.
Elizabeth held her breath again. When she arrived in the Jumper there had been 3 heartbeats showing on the monitor, but then it had flatlined again. How long would Carson be able to keep this up? How long would be too long to prevent permanent damage. Her mind raced to try to remember her CPR training.
“Getting stronger.” Carson takes off his stethoscope and leans over to put his ear to the Major’s chest. Everyone waits for his next words. “He is going to be OK!”
A collective release of breath echoes through the Jumper. Elizabeth’s knees give way, causing her to sink down onto the bench beside her, head hanging down. Rodney wanders past her, out of the Jumper. He takes a deep breath, then turns to come back in, stopping nearby.
He was going to be OK. Those were the words Elizabeth had wanted to hear. She looked back towards the man lying on the floor. This time her breathing was in time with his.

Teyla's POV
It felt like an eternity had passed since they had come through the ‘Gate. Teyla’s eyes could barely leave the lifeless form in front of her. She couldn’t believe that he was dead, but more than that, she couldn’t dare to hope they would bring him back. She had seen many wondrous things since she had met these new inhabitants of Atlantis, but to restore life once it was gone was almost impossible to believe.
Machines were beeping and whistling. A Medic has a large bag over the Major’s mouth and nose to provide him oxygen. Dr. Beckett orders everyone to “Clear!” They immediately back away while he places two paddles on his chest. A loud pop sounded and the Major arched off of the Jumper floor, only to flop back. Three small beeps come from the machine, and then it returns to a straight line.
She glances up as she hears Dr. Weir enter the Jumper. She watches her pause briefly to touch Lt. Ford’s hand as he is taken away to the infirmary. He was going to be alright.
She meets the leader’s eyes and nods in greeting.
Looking back to the Major, her mind returns to the time in the Jumper when she and Lt. Ford used this machine to end the Major’s life.
It had been Major Sheppard’s idea to use the defibrillator to make the creature release him. He was willing to die to get the creature off. That was when she realized just how desperate he was. When the Lt. had hesitated, the Major yelled “DO IT!”
She had never met anyone like the Major before. He was full of energy and seemed to have no fear when it came to dangerous situations. He had come to rescue his people and hers as well from the Wraith. No one that she had ever known would have even thought of attempting a rescue.
Now it was his turn to be saved.
The Medic is still breathing for the Major. All is quiet except for the beeping and the sounds of the air bag. Rodney stands nearby just watching. It is unlike him to be so still. He has been the one she has seen solve the large problems, but this was not in his skills to do. She knew his frustration.
Dr. Weir was visibly shaken by what she was witnessing. Teyla knew that it hadn’t been easy for her to let them go back to the planet. In fact, she wondered that they had been allowed. Elizabeth was a strong woman, but she hadn’t lived with this kind of danger. Teyla knew that sometimes chances had to be taken, but maybe they had gone too far this time.
The machine issues a few beeps. Beckett says “We’ve got a pulse.” He pauses to listen intently. “It’s getting stronger.” He pulls off his stethoscope and listens to the Major’s heart directly. “He’s going to be OK!”
Teyla sighs in relief and thanks the Ancestors.
