Sound was the first thing to return to him.  He heard a buzzing in his ears that seemed to get louder by the moment.  It seemed as if he should do something to stop the buzzing but he couldn’t think of what.  The noise slowly swirled around in the darkness that surrounded him.  It was oddly comforting to know he wasn’t alone.  Something was making that noise.

Slowly, some feeling was starting to return.  A cold, dampness began to seep into his extremities along with a dull ache.  He needed to move his arm or at least what he thought should be his arm, but no luck.  The ache sharpened into a pain and he decided it probably best to stay still.  He could feel things pressing and pushing on him and moving him around.

The buzzing continued around him, slightly increasing in volume after his effort to move.

Where was he?  He had no idea.  He couldn’t remember anything but the darkness.  Had he always been in darkness?  He didn’t think so.  Flashes of memories played in his mind.  Faces drifted by and teased him with their familiarity.  Thinning brown hair and startling blue eyes floated past him.  Soft, dark skin and a warm voice drifted in and out.  A sense of strength  was paired with compassion was mixed in with long, dark hair.

What did these things mean?   He wanted to find out.  He needed to return to these things.  He needed to make sure they were safe.  They reminded him of a time he wasn’t in darkness.

The buzzing sound  began to change.  It began to have rhythms and beats to it.  It became less like a buzz and more like melody.

He could feel a chill on his skin, but not over all of it.  There seemed to be a large place of heat and steam right in his center.  This place had changed from a dull ache into a throbbing pulse.  He knew he should be concerned but he couldn’t seem to be.  The darkness was protecting him.

The melody started to change again.  He began to hear some individual notes and different instruments.

He felt himself being lifted off the cold and placed on a softness.  It was still cold but he could already feel it start to warm as he lay on it.  Something soft was placed over him and more of the chill began to recede

He felt a quick pinch of pain and then a numbness started to spread from that point.  The darkness began to claim him.  He felt so tired.  He just wanted to fade away from all that around.  He was warming up and the pain he felt was beginning to numb.

Wait!  He couldn’t let go yet.  What if he never left the darkness again?  He needed to find the source of  his visions.  He began to struggle against the numbness.

The sounds around him began to clarify into words.  “Settle son.  We have you.”  It was a calming, familiar voice uttering those words of comfort.  “You are going to be just fine.  Relax and let us take care of you.”

“John, you are going to be fine.”  That was  a different voice.  It was the one from his memories.  The one he had paired with soft, dark skin.  He began to relax.  That voice would not let him stay in the darkness.

He needed to concentrate to do what he needed to do.  He focused totally on finding the light.  He slowly opened his eyes to slits.  He needed that light.  After the dark, it was hard to see anything but he did see what he remembered as blue.  It was a pair of eyes staring straight into his.

“He’s awake! Carson, get over here!  He’s awake!”

“Settle down Rodney.  I’m right here.”

The familiar cadences of the voices helped him focus just a bit more.  He could feel a warm, strong grip on his arm and a low, dark sound made him turn his head to the left.  There he could see a tall form standing beside him, nodding his head.   Beside the tall form, a much smaller form stood.

Slowly his vision cleared and he recognized those around him.  His team!  They were all there.  They were all safe.

His eyes began to close and the darkness started to take hold again.  It was okay this time.  He wouldn’t stay in the darkness forever.  He had his family to return to.

He wasn’t alone in the darkness.
