You know that great feeling you get when you discover a new band for the first time and you know that they're gonna grow to be one of your favorites? Well the band
Boris gave me that this week. They're a drone/noise rock trio from Japan, which I suppose is not everyone's cup of tea, but if I wrote rock music, this would probably be what it sounds like. Some of their songs remind me of Smashing Pumpkins, others remind me of Black Sabbath, and it also reminds me alot of bands like Electric Wizard, Sunn O))), Queens of the Stoneage and The White Stripes (particularly the song "Black Math") . It's just really thick, bassy, 70's style rock. If you like that sort of thing, I can't recommend this band enough. Check out the song "(Parting)" from the album Pink. Their albums are available from
southern lord records. I plan on ordering one when I get the chance (even though I don't really have the money for frivilous spending).
Speaking of music, I stumbled across this the other day:
Songbird. It's an itunes like media player based on the firefox browser. It's still a young project and I haven't had the chance to try it out personally yet, but it looks very promising, especially when you consider all the possible plugins and extensions which could be made for it, something that itunes currently lacks. Right now it only runs on windows, but it does however run on versions as old as Win98se, and it will eventually run on OSX and Linux as well. I'm looking forward to being able to try it out. If anyone test drives it, let me know how it goes.
I'm reading up on how to play the game,
Go, which is a japanese strategy game, in the same vain as chess, but totally different. Unfortunately, I don't think many people play so it might make learning a little more difficult. It sounds like a fun game to play though. I need to get back into playing chess too. It's good mental exercise
Tonight my nephew had a thing at his school where he had to dress up as a book character and basically roleplay while parents walked around and asked them questions. Him and two of his classmates were the trio. Here's a photo. So cute.
Tomorrow is JACON. Yay! See some of you tomorrow.
