Today was an awesome day because:

I received a reply email this morning from Mrs. Holt my Algebra teacher from FCCJ saying she would be thrilled to write a letter of reference for me for the peace corps. So now my biggest hurdle of this whole application process is done. I have gotten 3 people to commit to write letters. Although I still have to ( Read more... )

It was fun! I'm from Florida so I have not seen too much snow. Last year, here when it snowed I took 20 pictures on my way to work. To me, snow is quite the novelty. :) I hope it is still there tomorrow.

My German professor told me he would be "honored" to write me something, the one and only time a recommendation has not been given grudgingly. Unfortunately, he hasn't responded yet to any of my followup emails.

uh-oh, I hope that does not happen to me too. Although my friend Yonas said he would write one for me, and has yet, but is in PC service in Ghana, and it has only been a couple weeks. I am going to send out the PC reminder email if it takes longer than a month to hear back because my app can still be submitted with only the names of the refs, without the actual letters, but STILL, it would be nice.

Are you still going to apply to the peace corps?

I really should because, all in all, it's no more trouble than applying to graduate school. It's probably a good thing I haven't talked to my professor yet because I can get him to write grad school and Peace Corps recs at the same time without going back constantly to ask for something new. The only problem I might have is getting my employer to write me a rec. There's no deadline, is there? From what I've seen, it looks like rolling admissions. Also, I think the acceptance rate is something like 50% for everyone (including people who didn't finish their application!), so chances are pretty good.

Right there is no deadline to apply, but I think, once your app is online for longer than a year it is taken out of the system. I think the chances for you are most excellent!!! I am very concerned because for myself because, I am not a good writer and I am applying for a TEFL position, but of course with me, it's all about the proof reading and editing. I sent an essay to a friend of mine in Fl and she said, Oh....you have been in China a while now huh?

When I lived in Sweden, we used to keep plastic bags under the seats of our bikes for when it rained/snowed.

About the app process:
You can definitely submit the app and have the interview w/o the refs, BUT you will not be nominated without them. My process was held up an entire month while waiting for my letters. Also, have you talked to a recruiter yet? I'm really curious how they will interview you since you are in China. And your reference letters are supposed to be mailed to YOU and then you mail them in with your packet (that they send you after the interview),so I wonder about that as well.

and in case you don't know about it already, here is a super informative PC group/list/messageboard/whatever

We use the bags here too, only it has not rained here in few weeks, so nobody had them on their bikes. We were all totally surprised by the snow :)

I am filling out the app online and my ref letters are being done via email. I too am a little concerned about the interview, and getting medical clearance, but am not at that point yet, something will work out.

Thanks for the link, it's great!!!!

1. i really loved 20/30/40

2. i really love the way chinese people - from age 2 to 72 - think that for photographs, a smile and a peace sign are necessary.

3. i'm really jealous that you've got snow.

1. It was so good. I really loved the 40 year old's actions, and then when the 30 something threw her phone off the roof saying don't ever call me again and them started to cry, I could not help but laugh.

2. I KNOW! I did it to a group of military guys walking on the street the other day. They were all in their green uniforms and a few smiled and did it back. It was an awesome China moment :)

3. Dude, I am jealous you are not wearing a coat on top of 2 or 3 layers every time you go outside. But yeah, the snow is way cool.

It's odd. When it is snowing it does not feel as cold. I like it! :)
