I think I got purling! It is super-difficult and fumbly with this thicky nubbly red stuff, but its so pretty it's worth it. Then, when I use smooth yarn I will be that much quicker...
But learning a new stitch is weird, because I feel like I am back at square one, with the slow knitting and such. Go figure, it's only been like a month since I started, anyway...
