The first thing Hiccup noticed when he and Toothless flew out of the portal was that it was hot.
The second thing? It was really hot. Plus, no snow and no hail. Bonus.
The third thing, that the island below him was flat, at least compared to Berk, had really weird buildings, and appeared to have a distinct lack of dragons.
"What do you think, buddy?" he asked, leaning forward.
Toothless let out a rumbling growl, one eye rolling back to meet Hiccup's.
"Yeah, me too. We'll head for the woods." He pointed at the trees near the clearing. "You keep out of sight until we figure out how they feel about dragons." Okay, sure, he'd been allowed to bring Toothless, but Hiccup wasn't prepared to risk him until he'd made sure for himself no one was going to try to smite, slay or eat his friend.
Stealthy as a black dragon against blue sky could be, they slipped sideways through the air, down to ocean level, and flew in to land amongst the trees. Hiccup dismounted, then picked his slow and careful way out of the woods, one hand on Toothless' shoulder for balance until they reached the wood's edge. "I'll be back as soon as I can," he promised and headed for the welcome picnic.
[Definitely for broadcast, despite the pair's attempt at stealth. Somehow, I doubt the squirrels are going to miss a dragon!]
