History:
Frau (scrolled down) or
here.Personality: At first glance, Frau comes across as a brash, loud and uncaring person. He seems to not think about other's feelings - and if he does think about them, he doesn't seem to care much about them at all. He doesn't seem like the type to care deeply about anyone, and generally seems somewhat rough and seems to have no sense of subtle in the least. He really does seem like an obnoxious, perverted person who really shouldn't be a Bishop at all.
The truth, however, is that Frau isn't only those things. They're definitely only surface traits of the man, seen most easily by the fact that the orphans in the church absolutely adore him and are always around him, asking him to play with them. And Frau makes as much time as he can to do this. This is seen even further in his interactions with everyone else, especially Teito, as time goes by.
It is soon revealed that Frau is capable and does care for people - and when he loves someone, he loves that almost unconditionally. There's very little Frau isn't willing to do for people he cares about, and will always try his hardest to make sure that they're happy. When Mikage dies, for example, Frau spends days searching the world for Mikage's reincarnation, finally actually stealing him off his mum's - his very big, very scary dragon mum - back just so Teito would stop crying and stop being so sad, and how he refuses to let Castor wipe Teito's memory of seeing Zehel because it would take away his memory of Mikage's last smile. It's also shown in the fact that he dedicates a verse from the holy books to Teito when Teito tries to break him out, saying "Good luck for the exam." The verse says, "As long as you keep a part of me within you, my heart will be with you." It is the clearest example of Frau's expression of his affections for Teito because he isn't usually capable of being so direct about how he feels.
To get his point across, he is also not one for subtle words but will be incredibly blunt about exactly what he's trying to do. And will definitely rub their face into whatever it is they're trying to avoid seeing. He doesn't, for example, bother will trying to talk to Teito about how he's powerless to go up against the army to save Mikage and, instead, simply beats him in a fight and knocks him out to prove his point.
Frau is also somewhat jaded. It probably comes from the fact that, firstly, he's watched his family die. It was one of the reasons he ended up at the church and having such a close relationship with Bastien. For a while, Frau ceased to believe in god altogether. During this time, it was possible to see another trait of Frau's; his desire to help people. When he was still a child, he would go and perform purifications on people despite the fact that he wasn't yet a Bishop, and even though he pretended not to care about the Church's teachings when he was in class. Frau continues to extend his hand out to help people in need, not only the people he knows and already loves, but others, including lost souls who are somehow bound to earth.
Because he's seen so much death, however - and because he has dispatched so many people who've been corrupted - he has also lost some sense of what it means to be mortal and what it means to worry about death, or be bothered by death. On both sides. On one hand, he thinks of himself very much as a dead man borrowing a body; nothing to really worry about. If this body dies, it'd be a shame (because he thinks he's rather hot) but it wouldn't matter because he would just end up finding another one. He also isn't that affected by the death of others - or so he claims, and doesn't exactly feel the need to grieve when someone dies as much as other people do.
He is also somewhat afraid of losing his mind. Though he occasionally comes across as quite sure that he's steadily being destroyed by the scythe that is his weapon, and that the darkness of that weapon is eating away at his soul and consuming all his light, he is fighting with all his strength to stay as who he is. Even if, at times, he seems to have given up on it.He is currently hanging stubbornly on, having said that Teito has become his light in the darkness, because losing himself would mean hurting those who mean something to him, such as eating Teito's soul - but at times, he struggles with keeping himself under control. It therefore shows that, despite the carefree attitude he seems to take, he definitely has more self-discipline than most people give him credit for. Though, on some level, he knows there's no way to really escape fate - and he claims fate has done things for him, such as brought Teito to them at the Church - he and the others still seem determined to fight off some unknown prophecy for as long as they can. Stubbornness is definitely a trait that endures in just about everything that Frau does.
Strengths:
Physical: Frau is one of the strongest fighters out of the Bishops in terms of physical strength. It seems to be something that comes from both his history as a kid that used to get into a lot of fights, and simply from his own training. Zehel's power is also a physical one, unlike Profe's or Fest's, and focuses on his wielding of the scythe that is his weapon - one that has become a part of him, and has something of a mind of its own whether he calls on it or not.
His powers even without using Zaiphon are clearly seen when he fights with ordinary people, such as the slave traders who once owned Capella. Within moments, he and Teito manage to knock most of the lackeys out, and Frau is clearly not even sweating.
Also included in his physical strength would also be his Zaiphon, which is the magic of the world of 07-Ghost. Though it is said that everyone has it, not every has the ability to wield it. Frau's Zaiphon is incredibly powerful, shown by the fact that he (like Teito) once used a high level bascule that he broke on a regular basis when he was still training for the Bishop's exam - and then shown again by the fact that he holds the highest mark ever for the practical exam. His Zaiphon was so strong that others had to be examined separately because "Frau's light outshone their darkness". His training with Zaiphon, which is an Offensive-type, enables him to send souls back to heaven when he purifies them, enabling him to fight kors and wars, and allows him to therefore protect people.
He is also said to have an ability to see the colour of the souls of all things - people, animals, plants etc., such as when he associated the reincarnated Mikage with Teito's best friend, and the colour of Bastien's and the sapling's souls.
His scythe, also, is worth another mention as it gives him the powers of Zehel - which basically enables (and occasionally requires) him to devour dark, tainted souls. His duty is to sever bonds, and Zehel performs this well, being the one who seems to deal with the deadliest of their enemies, and the one that hunts the most often.
Mental: Frau is smart, even if he's lazy. He was able to get the highest marks in the Bishop's exam - but only after three tries. Because the times before, he simply couldn't be bothered to study for them. Despite not seeming it, he's also incredibly calculating and a good tactician when the situation calls for it.
Emotional: Frau is incredibly dedicated and caring (even if he tries not to come across that way and prefers to shout, insult and tease, and generally comes across as rough and uncouthed), and is willing to always help the weak and those that need it. He can harden his heart, however, when it's necessary to perform his job, however much it might hurt him emotionally, such as when he has to kill Bishop Bastien, who was his mentor and his important person. He is relatively emotionally stable even after everything - for the most part anyway, and is able to separate his emotions from his work. He is also incredibly loyal and will always be there - or will always try to be there - for those he cares about; he stands by Teito's side even when Teito doesn't expect him to. He even reassures Teito when he feels that his companion's resolve is fading, such as while he was locked away, waiting for execution. When he cares, he cares incredibly deeply, and there is incredibly little that he won't do for them, managing even to break free from the lust of his scythe and from the desire that seems to overwhelm him from time to time in order to stop himself from killing Teito.
Weaknesses:
Physical: Because his body is technically dead, Frau has a weakness against the cold. When his body freezes, it actually ceases to function, and Frau has to take his death god form until his body warms up and…comes back to life. It's also been mentioned that there might be some side affects to leaving his body very often seeing as the body really is technically dead and being borrowed as the vessel of Zehel.
Frau also sometimes can't control his own powers due to the corruption of the scythe that he is using. Occasionally, the scythe will make an appearance on its own and attempt to do what it wants (such as try to eat Teito's soul). The effects of the corruption, however, is more emotional and therefore addressed below.
Mental: See laziness above. Though that isn't necessary a mental floor, the fact that he sometimes can't bring himself to study is definitely a weakness. The fact that he didn't, for a long time, have faith in god at all was also a weakness in his development while he was studying for the exam, and often had to be scolded by his teachers - often even threatened - until he listened. It can also be said that there are times Frau is losing grasp of his mental stability because of the effects of said scythe as well, but that, once again, can be explained below.
If you asked Castor or Labrador, they would also mention Frau's perverted nature as a mental weakness. Especially when one considers that he is a Bishop. Then again, it's possibly they'd say he was mentally underdeveloped as well…so we might leave them out of this.
Emotional: Frau can be very hot-headed, and is often the type to shout first, think about it later. He's constantly teasing and getting into arguments with Teito without thinking it through, and he says things that definitely have a deep meaning to it - but it'd only be understood if he explained rather than simply gave away the punch line. Which is what Frau usually does.
He can also occasionally be emotionally detached. Too much so to be normal. When Bishop Bastien dies, for example, even Teito shouts at Frau for not grieving properly - and Frau simply says that it is because he's seen so much death that it doesn't mean anything any more.
The effects of the scythe can be put into many places, though perhaps emotional covers it the best seeing as it's implied that the scythe is eating away at Frau's soul one bit at a time, and that his light is slowly being eaten away by the darkness that keeps growing inside him. He is already tainted since he can hold a warsfeil's weapon when others wouldn't be able to. The scythe also gives him urges to eat people's souls - especially when they're pure, and especially Teito's (for reasons that Frau doesn't understand). Frau had apparently been drifting deeper into the darkness and slowly losing himself in it before Teito came along, because he mentions the fact that Teito is his shining light and if he were to ever eat his soul, then the person Frau is will cease to exist.
Samples
First Person: Ai, ai, ai. What's this? I must have drunk way too much last night. I don't remember a thing… I don't even remember how I got here… or even what the hell this thing I'm talking to is. Ah, that brat is going to be so annoyed.
Speaking of, where has that brat got to anyway? Why does he always run off on his own when I tell him again and --
[Irritated wing-ruffle.
Wait a minute.
There's a pause, the sounds of shifting, clothing rustling - followed by the muffled sounds of something being patted down. And again.]
Okay, what the hell is on my back and who stuck them there. [Silence - but not really. Muffled cursing can be heard as he seems to be trying to either a) look at them or b) get them off.
Silence for a few moments and then:]
Oh, this has gone beyond being a joke. Come on. Step forward. Who's the wise guy? And then I can show you how really funny I'm finding your sense of humor. Up close and very personally.
Third Person: It took a while for it to occur to him. After turning around and around in the mirror, craning his neck this way and that, Frau finally realised that there was a much easier way to do this. In his defense, it'd been easier to try to pull them off and to crane his head to look at them when he realised that tugging on them hurt. Surprise and shock just meant this solution hadn't occurred to him yet.
A moment later, his death god-self was standing there, looking at his body, crumpled as it was on the ground. He leaned down and tugged experimentally on the wing - but no, no, it was definitely firmly attached. Next, he noticed the barcode on his neck. That had definitely not been there before; he would have remembered getting that tattooed there.
"Messing with this body like that," Frau - Zehel - said with a sigh, rubbing one bony hand over the back of his hooded neck. "You just shouldn't mess with perfection." Of course, there was no one around to listening to his ramblings except himself - this time literally - and he crouched down to poke at his body once more. "Ah well. At least they don't look as bad as some of those other wings out there. At least they're not pink. I'm still a handsome bastard." Hey, he could be an optimist sometimes too.
He went back to his physical body, stood back up and stretched, shook himself - all the way to those damn wings - and checked to make sure everything was still in working order. You could never be too careful.
He reached back a hand and patted his wing. "Well, it looks like you're here to stay." Not exactly a positive thought but when a death god's scythe took a liking to you (that's what Frau liked to think of this as anyway; it was less depressing), you got used to having weird things attached to you.
Like Teito. Clearly, they all fell into the same category. Speaking of which, it was time to find out where that brat had got to in the first place. Finally abandoning his study of himself and all the new additions to his body, Frau stepped outside and picked a random direction to walk in. Somehow, he was sure he'd run into something of use in this damn quiet village at some point or other; it couldn't stay this boring forever.
