It's hard to make recommendations without knowing what you've already watched. Here are some series I've recently watched in their entirety and my assessment:
DeadwoodHighly recommended. Though it isn't overtly presented as such, the show is all about how political power coalesces from an anarchic and lawless society.
The WireHighly recommended. Though it isn't overtly presented as such, the show is all about how political power coalesces from an anarchic and lawless society.
OzThis series purports to be a realistic depiction of prison life, covering the behind-the-scenes machinations of the administration, guards, and inmates. It's watchable, with very memorable characters, but is often preposterously absurd. Be prepared to crank up your suspension of disbelief the longer you watch.
Six Feet UnderAbout the same quality as Oz. It starts off as a sort of psychological drama about a family-run funeral business, but by the end of the series the producers pretty much ignored the business aspect and it became just another show about personal relationships.
LostThis speculative fiction series is absolutely captivating for the first few seasons, but it becomes increasingly clear that the writers are just fucking with you and have no intention of explaining or resolving all the mysteries and plot lines they throw at you. If you're the kind of person who hates loose ends, I'd advise against watching this show. If that sort of thing doesn't bother you too much, you'll probably have a lot of fun.
The Civil WarThis is a nine-part, twelve-hour documentary miniseries about the American civil war. You'd think this would be dry but I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of humour in it.
BottomWith Rik Mayall's recent passing we've started rewatching this series. It's by far my favourite sitcom, and even better now that I understand all the Britishisms. :)
