It's hard to make recommendations without knowing what you've already watched. Here are some series I've recently watched in their entirety and my assessment:
DeadwoodHighly recommended. Though it isn't overtly presented as such, the show is all about how political power coalesces from an anarchic and lawless society.
The WireHighly recommended. Though it isn't overtly presented as such, the show is all about how political power coalesces from an anarchic and lawless society.
OzThis series purports to be a realistic depiction of prison life, covering the behind-the-scenes machinations of the administration, guards, and inmates. It's watchable, with very memorable characters, but is often preposterously absurd. Be prepared to crank up your suspension of disbelief the longer you watch.
Six Feet UnderAbout the same quality as Oz. It starts off as a sort of psychological drama about a family-run funeral business, but by the end of the series the producers pretty much ignored the business aspect and it became just another show about ( ... )

Oh, and here are some we tried to watch but gave up on quite quickly:
Parks and RecreationA greatly inferior rip-off of the American version of The Office.
ExtrasHas its moments, but not compelling enough for us to stick with it. Ricky Gervais can write for one character and one character only, and that is Ricky Gervais. This show has all sorts of very famous guest stars, and while you'll see their lips moving, the only sounds that come out are Ricky Gervais.
Curb Your EnthusiasmYet another "embarrassment comedy" series which is more painful than funny.
HannibalPretty mediocre. Might give it another try if we can find subtitles for the mumbling Danish guy in the starring role.
All that Gervais/Office stuff reminds me, though of another Gervais show which actually belongs on the earlier "highly recommended" list: An Idiot Abroad. In case you haven't seen it, it's a travel series where Gervais sends his friend Karl Pilkington on various holidays around the world. What's unusual (and funny) about the series is that Pilkington has no ( ... )
