Music for a Gathered Mass

Nov 03, 2006 00:01

Tonight, I led Carleton's Contemporary Music Ensemble in a test of my recent aleatoric composition experiment; I wanted to do this before I start trying to formalize its elements into something larger. The fundamental concept is simple, but evaluating and dictating the controls is something more difficult - it must remain performable for a non-musician, while still maintaining musical qualities.

Overall, I would call it a success, and feel more justified in continuing its development. I was also given a lot of interesting feedback on possible variations to explore, which was nice. Unexpectedly, several performers likened it to a form of meditation, and asked that a small scale version of it be held at the beginning of each meeting. On one hand, I feel this might trivialize its importance within the group, while I also feel it to be a great compliment. I'm not sure which way to go on the issue at this point, so hopefully time will provide clarity.

Thanks again for taking part in it (or at least humouring me), latelastfall.
