I write this from a hotel room in Sunnyvale, CA, after having attended my first day of work.
This of course means my days of living in the DC metro area have come to an end. I honestly have mixed feelings about this.
Work-wise, I'm glad it's over. After my initial training in Springfield, VA was over...there wasn't much left for me to look forward to. 90% of my time was probably spent reading, socializing or distracting myself in other ways.
Socially, I'm torn. I'm already really missing the cookouts, the drinking, the sailing, the wakeboarding, the skiing and most importantly...the people. They made the place worth staying in.
Nonetheless, I feel things are going in a good direction. I transferred to a fairly new program and aside from day-to-day tasks, a lot of work can be done to make it a much more functional group. Once my initial training is complete, I look forward to contributing towards this. It's also reassuring to hear that a number of people in my group work full-time while pursuing Masters degrees.
There's definitely a lot of room for growth here, but I still feel like I left a lot behind.
