My sister had a guest bed in her bedroom that was perhaps three feet off of the floor and had drawers under it. The drawers were only a couple of feet deep, so there was basically a large empty space behind there and we put a couple reading lamps in there and we'd just sit under the bed for hours reading books. I think I read "Indian in the cupboard" while sitting under there.
We had a huge snowstorm one time and school was cancelled for two days straight. I was actually at the library when it had started to snow and I was walking back tom y house with my new book, "Jurrasic Park". I think I slipped in the road and dropped the book in the snow, getting the jacket and some of the pages wet. I red that book over the two days that school was out (which was an amazing feat for a 4th grader or so.
The house in Buchanan had this one heater vent at the bottom of the stairs and in the winter time I would wake up like 20 minutes early and go downstairs with my blanket and just sit there, using the blanket to trap the heat coming out and I'd only have my head sticking out. Sometimes I'd fall back asleep with the heat.
I remember watching reruns of star trek TNG after school with my sister almost every day.
My friends always seemed to have the coolest technical toys. Dougy Smith had Capsella (which were the electronic cross between Tinkertoys and Legos/erector set) and he also had slot cars and train sets. Brrian Frye had a Bunch of Erector Sets and this weird robotic arm thingy. Chris and David across the street had a bunch of GI Joes. I was always annoyed because the Capsella and erector sets were the coolest thing ever, but Brian and Dougy only played with them when I came over. (and only if I practically demanded to do so)
Billy Martin had a ton of NERF stuff and we'd always have NERF wars at his house, which sucked for him, because his mom hated everything, including anywhere fro two to 10 rambunctious boys playing NERF wars inside and outside... but probably not as much as she hated when we'd play the same games with super-soakers.
One time I was walking home from either Kindergarten or young fives. It was in the wintertime and I was throwing snowballs (or at least one) at some kids on the other side of the street. I think there were either some of my friends, or they had thrown snowballs first. Anyway, a crossing guard saw me and through I was throwing them at a bus and she came over and was yelling at me and i was at the mouth of the driveway that went to my house. She demanded to know if that was my house, (like she was going to allow me and talk/tattle to my mom. knowing that she didn't know the truth about what had happened (that I'd not even hit the bus, let along been aiming at it I didn't feel compelled to tell the truth) I told her that I just cut through the driveway to get to my house and then I started walking down it and she was kind of following me. I started running and ran past my house (so that she wouldn't think I lived there) and then waited a bit and went back.
I remember sometimes I'd go to matt's house after school and ride the bus with him. I never rode the bus as a normal thing for school... I always walked... and so riding the bus seemed really odd and awkward. I had to have a special note/bus pass from my parents and have it cleared and stuff at the office, etc.
In elementary school most of my friends were in the accelerated reading program and a few times a week we'd all get shuttled from the three schools to one central school to have class. The funny thing was that we rode on the 'short bus.' which is the stereotypical bus for the mentally/physically handicapped kids. One time the bus was late to pick us up and my friend Paul resorted to eating ants and other bugs because he'd gotten so hungry.
