So it turns out I won't have to move home after graduation. I was actually able to get a full-time job right out of school as a journalist... it's amazing.
For those who do not know, I have interviewed in the past month for two different jobs. I first went to Fairfax, VA near D.C. to interview with Qatar University for a teaching position -- they didn't like that I am not fluent in Arabic. I then interviewed the next week with a niche business publication in Jersey, near the shore.
After the Jersey interview, I had a writing test where I did a mock interview with someone from the company and then wrote a news story. After this was evaluated, I was told they still needed to do a background check. Finally, last Wednesday I was offered the job and I accepted it on Thursday.
The position is with a publication owned by the United Communications Group (UCG) named Oil Price Information Service (OPIS). The audience of the publication is mainly investors, traders and business executives. My beat will be reporting on refinery news -- any time an oil spill occurs, a fire breaks out, a refinery breaks down, I will report on how production is affected and what specifically happened. What I write will be used to help evaluate how this will affect the company's stocks and the market.
I start on June 4, and on May 20 will be moving everything to the D.C.-area in Rockville, MD. I will also be traveling to their office in Jersey for some training. From all I have read and heard, it's a really good atmosphere at the company.
So I will be on the East Coast and don't know when I will be back to Missouri or to Texas. But I am excited. This type of job should help me excel in my business reporting and open up more opportunities to me in reporting. Well that is the plan.
Now I just need to get through my last classes, papers and tests.
