My news sources inform me that the body count is up to 56,000 now. Last night when I went to sleep it was only about 25,000 still. It just keeps going up as the dead continue to wash ashore and be dug out of the rubble. The head of the EU's relief project says that the count may go above 100,000,
according to Wikipedia.
That's a lot of people. This is probably the biggest natural disaster since the Plague.
Update: According to the Wikipedia article on
Death Tolls, the Tangshan Earthquake in China, 1976, killed somewhere between 200,000 and 400,000 people. So this is not, at least, the biggest amount of deaths by natural disaster this century. But then again, that's not counting possible repurcussions from sanitation problems in the aftermath.
Can anyone suggest a good charity for international relief? I kinda want to send some money over there, now that I actually have some disposable income.
