Thanksgiving always makes me think of my paternal grandparents. I always hated Christmas and Easter as a child, so Thanksgiving was the one holiday when I saw my entire family and it was just about being together. It's still my favorite traditional American holiday even though we are too scattered now. This year it's just me, Machaelle and JennyNemesis at our place, I think, but the door is always open to last minute guests.

Anyway, this is my grandfather in front of his plane as a young man.

And this is my grandmother.

My grandfather would often tell me stories about being shot down over Yugoslavia or regretting having bombed Vienna, but my grandmother never spoke about the war. I know she drove a troop transport at some point, which is not a surprising role for a six-foot tall farm girl from Iowa. And my grandfather mentioned that they met at an officer's party at a private home and he was so flustered and intimidated by her that he fell into the backyard pool!

I should get around to scanning some more old photos...
