Rain

It's been pouring for about 12 hours now, over 7 inches by noon today, and another 5 inches predicted. The creeks, ponds, and gullies are full to the brim. Roads are closed all over the place. We live up on a ridge, so no major flooding at our place. I decided to head home early this afternoon, though, just in case the roads on the way were bad ( Read more... )

First I couldn't figure out why you had a "donut" spare for your bike.

Then I wondered why you had to have a shop fix your flat.

Then I realized you were driving.

I think that (a) I was tired when I read this last night, and (b) I just assume you're biking.

Cognitive reading studies folks have shown that we don't see every letter and every word when we read -- we detect a pattern and fill in pieces automatically*. Predispositions can affect what we see; I didn't even see "left" in front of "front" because it wasn't there in my schema of you biking to work.

Yeah, I figured something like that. But I just thought I'd needle you a bit. Just for the record, I try to ride my bike to work 3 times a week. Tuesdays I always drive because I have choral union rehearsal at night and don't want to ride home in the dark. And I normally drive if there are torrential thunderstorms predicted. Also ice or snow. ;-)
