I'm in the midst of a toy poodle saga, trying to weigh whether a great breeder is worth another $1000 for a dog we can't easily meet because he's in Southern California. We've met a puppy up here who seems sweet, but the breeder seems a little scary (dirty, unsure of ancestry, etc.). The price, however, is much better with the scary breeder. What to do?

Kathy - just my 2 cents- the puppy is worth the money - and if the California breeder is as good as advertised, then they should have a clause wherein they will take back the puppy.

Please do not go with a breeder if self, kennels, or dogs are dirty, and please, please certainly not if they are unsure of ancestery - that just screams puppy mill to me - both facets do! No matter how sweet the puppy is - 99% of all puppies are sweet.

Call the breeder in California, get references, call the references - yes it's money on long ditances but is also money well spent. Just as the extra for a first class puppy is. No reputable breeder will hesitate to give references. Call the local Poodle club ( in California ) and ask for information - look up the breeders dogs on line, in dog show results - puppy mill breeders DO NOT show their dogs, and just becasue there is a Ch. appended to a name three or four generations back means nothing! Look for recent information on the puppys parentage, and the parents show records etc.
