Hamlet
Hamlet was written by William Shakespeare, and we were able to watch the production done by Royal Shakespeare Company. The movie was great and mostly in period. The security cameras at the beginning of the movie give you the idea that it is going to be a little bit more modern. They were misleading to say the least. The play is still spoken in Shakespeare which can be difficult to understand if you do not have an ear for it. I find it much easier to read Shakespeare’s language rather than listen to it because typically there is a strong accent attached to the speaker. Plus when you read it you can stop if something does not make sense to you.
Hamlet is visited by his recently murdered father who tells him that his brother has killed him, and that Hamlet must avenge his death. We learned that Hamlets Hamartia throughout the play is his indecision. Hamartia is a tragic flaw in the protagonist that brings about the tragedy. In the case of Hamlet the tragedy of the play is the death of Hamlet.
This was one of the most bearable plays I have seen of Shakespeare, possibly because it was a little more modern than others, but for some reason it was able to keep my attention better than the romances such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet. The plot had a lot of suspense and action to keep me interested and guessing what would happen next.
