The Ignorant Town People

“The Very Old Man with the Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez was a fantasy short story. It had to do with things that do not make sense and are not possible to prove a point. When this short story was written, Marquez intended to show how terrible people in general are. This short story also shows how simple minded we can be at times.

When the people find a man with wings who they presume to be an angel, they go get the smart neighbor lady first, then they go get the priest. I would think that if you had a math question maybe then you would get the lady next door; however when I think I may have an angel in my back yard I would most definitely contact the priest first. This is just the most logical thing to do. Throughout the story they are constantly subjecting this poor man to treatment that is not deserving of any good man. They have him caged up, they talk bad about him, and they do not want him around. Even though the family made money off of him so that they could have a nicer house, they are still annoyed that he is there. The man eventually loses his popularity with the towns folk. The towns people are now interested in a spider girl who wondered into the woods and became half of a spider. It is amazing that people would rather see a freak than an angel.
