Carl and Icelandic

Jan 04, 2012 13:51

It seems Carl has been studying Icelandic ... which surprises the fuck out of me. This is the same man who absolutely refused to learn any Japanese upon going to Japan, meaning he was dependent upon people who were able to communicate the entire time he was there.

So imagine my surprise when I got a text from him reading, "... you have no books on Icelandic on your bookshelf."
"Nope, no I don't." ... "Waaaaait a minute, why are you asking??"
"Because I'm learning the language."
"... whyyyyy?? o_O"

Carl has apparently taken interest in Ásatrúarfélagið, the native Icelandic religion, and this has fueled his interest in Iceland, the Icelandic language, and a few other things.

It just makes sense, then, that a trip to Iceland would be up his alley. I had suggested going to Bears on Ice in September. This ignores, of course, the fiscal reality. It is certainly not cheap to fly to Iceland, let alone get rooms, etc. I'd love to make it a reality, but I'm not sure how to go about doing it.

It's a nice thought at least ...
