Tuesday night
nytemarewulf and I went with
slavetoreznor to go see Avenue Q at the Peoria Civic Center. I can't tell you how long I'd wanted to see this show, but was never playing anywhere near me. When we saw last year that the upcoming season at the Civic Center had this show we had to jump on it.
And for the most part I was pleased. I'd only been exposed to the soundtrack so it was great to see the parts that WEREN'T on the album. My God, I LOVE the Bad Idea Bears!! Some of the visuals were just great, in that it's reminiscent to the old episodes of Sesame Street that I grew up with.
That being said, there were some off points. The guy playing Gary Coleman had some vocal range issues and so all of the music had to be transposed down to accommodate him. It's unfair on my part, certainly, but he doesn't hold a candle to the OBC Gary. The sound system's kind of m'eh in the Civic Center, so some things that SHOULD have been funny were hard to catch because the sound had become slurred.
The most disappointing part about the show, though? Carl was VERY "m'eh" about the whole show. Jamie and I had a great time, but Carl sat there with his arms folded and gave a disappointing look to the stage for two hours. He said there were funny parts, but that he couldn't get why everyone was all over this show. And certainly, that's his right, but I think I might have hyped it up to the point where the show actually reaching that point would have been unrealistic. Oh well, I tried, and Lord knows I apologized enough for bringing him to a show he didn't like.
