Holmes, who loathed every form of society with his whole Bohemian soul, remained in our lodgings in Baker Street, buried among his old books, and alternating from week to week between cocaine and ambition, the drowsiness of the drug, and the fierce energy of his own keen nature.
There's multiple references to cocaine throughout the stories, but interestingly no one seems to have a problem with it (it could indicate the preconceptions of cocaine in the era), and it's not like Holmes is showing any signs of addiction through the book.

Honestly, though, the only way I'll be able to get through that would be to pretend that it's all just a steampunk rendition of a Holmesian tale.

As for the Holmes movie...ick! It sounds like I Robot all over again, i.e.: “we bought the rights to the name and slapped it on our crappy, unrelated screenplay.”
