Yes, another YouTube video. I worked on cleaning up the house today for a house guest who, sadly, had to cancel at the last minute. With Carl up at his game, it means it's another Sunday alone. Sometimes I don't mind that, but when you're looking forward to spending that time with someone ... yeah ( Read more... )

:-(
I know what it is like. Starting the 8th, Jeff will be working 6 days/wk... 1 PM to 9 PM.
I spend a lot of time alone. Neither of us have much of a "friends" network... its a long story, so I cook and watch a lot of TV.

A Japanese language question:
what's the difference in translation between Ikimasu and ikimashoo?

Ikimasu = the "imperfect" form of "go" (usually present tense - "Mainichi gakkou e ikimasu" = "(I) go to school everyday".

Ikimashou = more of a suggestion. "Gakkou e ikimashou ka?" "Should we go to school?"

Yes... I see.
Once in Tea Class, I came to the door of the tea room, knelt, place my Chawan on the floor and said " Ippuku, sashiagemashoo"
My Tea Teacher looked a bit strained and after class asked me why I used that form. I said I wanted to say "I shall make you a bowl of tea. " as opposed to "I will make you a bowl of tea." which is the standard phrase used. Now, understanding that Tea Language is a bit archaic and very formal, I was surprised at Sensei's reaction. His advise was... "stick to the script and don't improvise" and he laughed.

There isn't really a future tense in Japanese -- there's simply perfect and imperfect (did it already happen? It's "perfect". Otherwise, it's imperfect -- "non-past", if you will.)

The "-mashou" is used in place of commands in direct speech, which may seem too direct or too bossy.

Heheheh, we've discussed it on and off an realized that, if we were to move west, we'd be living in Sanyo boxes. Neither one of us make that much now, but it's fine in Central IL. With no jobs out west we'd be beyond fucked, especially with $1800/month studio prices.
