夏川りみー島唄 / NATSUKAWA RIMI - SHIMAUTA / Rimi Natsukawa - Island Song
This is one of my favourite melodies, and I wouldn't've ever known it existed had blithwulf not shown it to me years ago. This version maintains the verses in the original Okinawan dialect (as seen with particles like ぐゎ, and even non-standard pronunciations of kanji, as seen when she sings kaji for 風), but goes back to traditional Japanese for the last stanza of the song. There's something very simple yet very beautiful here, reinforced by the staging of this particular tune. The shimauta is also the name for a styling of song that's native to Okinawa, and certainly "Shimauta" is one of those shimauta.
ALFREDO CASERO w/ CLAUDIA OSHIRO - SHIMA UTA
A Japanese band named The Boom had recorded a rock "Shima Uta," only to be discovered by Argentinan singer and comedian Alfredo Casero, who did a cover of this version. The song had gained quite a bit of popularity, even outside of Argentina, to the point where it became Argentina's theme song during the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
