Things I Can't Afford, Volume 7572

It's nice to want things, isn't it? Still, I look at the following items, and I can't in my mind justify ever paying as much as they're asking for these:

  • 1870 JAPANESE WORLD ATLAS [click] - Do I really need to explain why I adore this? For starters, it's completely in Japanese, but it's also from a time when kanji names were common. Older names that are now considered obsolete are seen (I can see the word 支那, Shina, stretched across China, whereas this name is no longer used as it's considered pejorative). But I also love maps -- particularly older maps, seeing countries that used to be, lines that used to exist(and even lands that never were, as seen in maps much older than this!) -- there's something fascinating about that. I'd love to page through that book, find out what flags are shown on some of these pages (there's quite a few flags that I don't recognize!). I know it's an antique, but still -- $400??? Oy.
  • THE OPTIMUS MAXIMUS KEYBOARD [click] - I've been drooling over this thing for YEARS -- one of my LJ friends sent me a link and I became giddy at the very thought of a keyboard whose keys changed depending on program or language (FINALLY I CAN SEE WHAT I'M TYPING WHEN I TYPE IN RUSSIAN!!!). Of course, there's the little problem that it costs fucking 43,990 rubles (about $1565), more than I paid for my entire computer. As cool as the keyboard is, how could I conceivably justify paying that much for a KEYBOARD??
  • expensive shit, 日本, japan, computers
