Britain's Got Talent broadly has two types of contestant*. Talented, and deluded. ITV edit it as such. When they edited Susan Boyle**, they were doing it in hindsight. They set her up to look like a deluded person, then 'revealed' the astonishing talent.
In other words, they tricked the viewing audience. And now everyone, everywhere*** is astonished and teary-eyed, hurrying to shout out that yes! they did judge by appearances!
Lovely. People got a little, happy rush in during the credit crunch. So now, they'll be expecting it to happen all the time. Which means they'll still be judging by appearances? *sigh*
Pessimistic, me?
I wish Ms. Boyle all the best, I really do. I think she has some talent. I also have a sneaking suspicion she will deal with all of this okay; she seems like a 'water off a duck's back' kind of person.
I am fed up of the media frenzy and bandwaggoning, that's all, and I hope she doesn't win solely as a result of the mad publicity.
*Okay, there's three - there's also my favourite - the people who are rubbish and know it.

***Meh...various US celebs/chatshows/news programmes for instance. Oprah, Demi Moore...can't be arsed to name any more.
