After a Winter of shop-bought, I saw the farm over the road had the sign up for their eggs for the first time this year. Free-range it says, and if you go over the field at the side you can see the hens doing, well, whatever it is hens do in the wild. There's a bit of an orchard and a little copse for them to scratch about it. £1.20 per half dozen - cheaper too. Random sizes and oddly boxed.
I had forgotten.
The yolks were bright, bright orange, and the taste was so strong, for a split second I wondered if they'd gone off. Silly me. So tasty. I wish I could send y'all a box.
I normally buy free range in the Winter, anyway. Paxcroft if I can get them cos you can drive by and see the chickens in their big fieldy/compound things. But the eggs are not so sunny as those ones over the road.
I'm counting my chickens blessings. There are some very good things about living here.
ETA: In a couple of months, another neighbour, who keeps the biggest, whitest, most cloud-like hens I've ever seen, will have more eggs than he can handle...it's like Xmas when you find a surprise carton at your front door :)
