Athena stood in the center of a large open sandy circle, about thirty yards in diameter. The arena was part of her large estate in Athens and in the distance her villa could be seen. The nearest building was a large stable, with multiple paddocks for horses and one large aviary for her owls. The arena was normally used to train her chariot horses, but she had a different purpose in mind for today. She was not in her chariot gear, but simple black leather armor, the Aegis draped over her shoulders and her helmet sitting on top of her hair. Her shield rested against one leg and next to her was a stand of practice swords, and a rack of practice shields. All were made of wood, as her student wouldn’t be ready for real metal weapons for awhile. When she was confident the wooden weapons were mastered, she would move to metal.
A clicking made Athena glance down at the stand, where one of her owls perched. He clicked at her again and then tilted his head to the side. She smiled and offered him a hand. He quickly stepped up and settled as she lifted him up to they were eye level. “Yes, yes, you are always so eager to work. Go and tell them I am ready.” She said when he clicked at her again. “Do not dawdle. This is important.”
She held him away from her and gave a little toss to release the owl. His wings snapped open with barely a sound and with a few driving strokes he was away. As one of her special owls, he was gone in a matter of seconds, traversing the world with his master’s message.
