Operation Space Saver - CD Edition
I decided a couple of years ago that it would behoove me to rip all my CD's to a digital format. I had an MP3 player (Dell Jukebox- 15gig) and I liked it a lot. I also new that I would probably get an Ipod. I didn't want to, but it was inevitable the way the market was going. So one summer I spent about a month ripping roughly 10 cd's a night. When I was done, I sold a bunch. Probably about 100. I have a list somewhere of which ones I sold - no surprise there. The rest, either I couldn't part with or nobody would buy... either way, I stored them in the media room on 2

Here's what they looked like at home...
See them on the ends... chock full of CD's. Here they are emptied out.
I'm turning the extra bedroom into a Library / guest room. A place to keep all my books and with a daybed. It will be a better definition of the room. So when I sell the house, it will look better than a place to store media...
Anyhoo... since I have converted all the cd's to digital and I no longer buy them... it makes no sense to dedicate a wall to them. So I had to think of a way to condense them. Sure I could sell them. But there are couple of reasons I don't . There is a small digital quality issue. It's my fault. It has to do with the bit rate I recorded at and I here it in the playback volume levels. Some of the cd's need to be re-ripped. It's something I would like to do someday... but not in the near future. There is also the fact I really don't want to let them go. It took me Years to get rid of my albums and I am still kicking myself... so you can see my dilemma.
I received a Target Gift Card for some Handi-Anne work I did on their house. I caulked the tub, fixed the fence, did some electrical stuff. I did it cause I wanted to not for any money. But I got a nice surprise of a gift card. Hey who can't use a $25 gift card? So when I came up with the idea that I should put all the cd's in books so I could store them with... You guessed it... the books... I decided to give Target a gander. And what I found was a 232 cd leather Binder normally $39.99, on the clearance end for $23.08! And there was only 2 of them left. Luckily that was all I would need. so I scooped them up and after about 5 hours (not in a row) I successfully moved all the cds and liner notes (front and back) to the binders. The result is shown below. Foster saw the camera out and decided he needed to be in the picture for size reference.
I'm pretty pleased with the results. I boxed up the cases. I looked for a place to recycle them, but there isn't any. The suggestions people had for them was to donate them. Well, while removing the backs to get the liner notes out, I cracked more than I didn't. So they really aren't worth anything to anyone. So Tuesday morning, I'll bag them up and put them in the trash can for Pick-up.
I love making space. Now I am figuring out how to digitize my DVD's. My goal is to put them on external hardrives (or one big honking one) and then run it through a media center... or an Apple TV. No I'm not drinking the Kool-Aid, they just seem to have the products that fall in line with what I want to do. Simplify.
