Gotham Museum of Art Burglarized
Burglars broke into the Antiquities wing over the weekend and stole hundreds of dollars worth of art, including a rare Egyptian papyrus, according to police. "The odd thing was, there was a huge emerald necklace two rooms that would have required probably less effort to steal, but these people completely ignored that," said Detective James Miller. "Damndest thing." Three small Greek vases dating to 75 BC were also taken, along with an Egyptian hand mirror from the Seventeenth Dynasty. Police have no leads at this time, and anyone with any information about the thefts is urged to contact the Gotham City Police Department.

New Year, New Gotham?
The report released today by the Gotham Centre for Justice Statistics shows a sudden, staggering decrease of 30 per cent in violent crime rates against sex workers in the East Dockland area. Previous to this, there had been three consecutive years of increase in violent crimes against the state rate. There was a hike of just under 2 per cent in 2006, followed by a rise of 6 per cent in 2007.

Raccoons Carry Deadly Parasite
A parasite common to raccoons killed five Gotham children within the past five weeks and poses a threat to others who play where raccoons feed and defecate, warns a Gotham medical researcher who played a key role in ascertaining the cause of death of the five children.

"It seems to be toddlers that are at greatest risk," says Christopher Moertel, medical director of hematology and oncology at Children's Hospitals and a clinical associate professor at the University of Gotham.

The parasitic nematode lives harmlessly in the brains of about 50 percent of the raccoons in this state and perhaps as many as 75 percent in some other parts of the country, says Moertel. The worm can pass into people who touch raccoon feces and then touch their mouth or food. The nematode "has to be introduced into the intestinal tract so it can hatch," Moertel said. Children are susceptible because they play on the ground and often put their hands in their mouth.

Inside the body, the parasite migrates to the brain, inciting an immune response. The neurotoxin the human body produces to kill the worm also destroys the white matter of the brain. "Certainly when they travel to the brain, that's when devastation and death occur," Moertel says. Nationwide, the nematode has killed or seriously injured children in about 20 documented cases, he says. Turn to page G3 to learn what you can do to protect your children.
