Countdown in 5...4...3...2...

Confetti, glowsticks, free hot chocolate for all the kiddies, and an awful lot of boys in blue -- it's New Year's Eve in Gotham City. This year, as with most other years, the main festivities are being held at Merchant's Square. Neatly affixed to one of the taller buildings, there's a giant, video screen and throughout the evening there will be ( Read more... )

So she's spiked her hot chocolate. Can you blame her, in this kind of cold? And it goes so well with cigarettes. Especially the kind of cigarettes in long holders. Which in turn go well with sunglasses, which themselves are really good for covering up the kind of bruising that goes along with getting one's nose broken a few days previous.

She hasn't been in Merchant's Square in so long. It's somewhat gratifying to see that it hasn't changed all that much. More neon, maybe, and more trash in the gutters, but that's to be expected.

She cuts through the crowd like a knife, unconsciously, relaxing into the noise.

Someone else has spiked her hot chocolate too, and has had quite a lot of it. Query stumbles into Selina due to the over-hilarity of her fellow party goers and immediately reaches to steady the other woman.

"Sorry! Oh, sorry... did you spill anything? You can have mine!" She says loudly and cheerfully, somewhat louder than is strictly necessary to be heard over the crowd. Her coat is half falling off but she doesn't seem to mind, revealing tattoos. "Cool cigarette holder. Thingy."

She's more amused, than anything else, steadying Query as much as Query's trying to steady her.

"No, no, you're fine. I'm fine. Thanks." Nothing got on her dress, anyway. That's good. Oh, is that whiskey? She was going with brandy, herself. She peers at the girl's ink for a moment. "Oooh, where did you get those?"

Pleased to have made a new acquaintance, she beams the genial beam of the inebriated and peers at herself as if that will help her answer. "Oh... North Carolina, all of 'em. Heh, not exactly the number one tourist destination, but Jay's Magic and Ink in Asheville is great, if you're ever around."

Ah. A chatty one. She fumbles out a smoke herself, lighting it dreamily. "Man, Gotham rocks." ... well. That's a... special opinion.

She smiles the smile of the tolerantly not-quite-sober. "I hear Asheville's nice. Never been, myself."

She's keeping an eye out to make sure that the Suicide Girl doesn't set herself on fire. "Gotham is... it's definitely Gotham. Hi. I'm Selina."

"Hi! I'm Carrie." And so she is, keeping it all careful for the boss. As soon as she's sorted with lighter and pack and cocoa, she offers Selina a hand to shake. "Nice to meet you. You sound like a native." Heh heh. "I love the people here, you know? Like, freaking Spider Jerusalem, and I bet you're way more awesome than someone I'd meet in Asheville."

Shaking happens!

"Born and bred. And I don't know about awesome, but I'm pretty okay." She's definitely amused. Or she will be up until her shoes get puked on. "I dunno, for my money, I like Florence. Paris would be great if it weren't for Parisians, but Florence... something about the place. Not like here, that's for sure."

But the rooftops are the best in the world. Of course, Carrie doesn't need to know that.

"Damn. This is the farthest I've gotten away from home," she says admiringly. "I'll have to get out there some time. But I think I'd come back, wouldn't you? Well, I guess you have?"

Maybe just for New Year's.

"It's gotten entirely too interesting to go away again." And there is an understatement. Oh yes.

The self-satisfied grin of agreement is accompanied, surprisingly, by a period of companionable silence. They both have things they're not saying, and Query is quite content with that. "Happy New Years, Selina," she says finally, still grinning.

"Happy New Years, Carrie."

If it's possible to be smug and chipper and welcoming at the same time, she manages.
