"The coffee is too close to the edge," he said, and when she ignored him he said it again.

"The coffee is too close to the edge."

"I know," she replied without looking up. "Don’t spill it."

He reached for the sports section while keeping his eyes on the cup.

"It's stressing me out. If you're not going to drink it, can you at least move it?"

She pretended she was annoyed but smiled and moved the cup.

"John thought Andrea liked him," she said.

"Andrea? Andrea likes no one. When was this?"

"At the party last night. He thought she was smiling at him."

"My god. She wasn't smiling at him. I've told him before that he can’t confuse her coldness with class or being polished. She really just doesn’t like him."

"What happened to him," she asked from behind the papers after a slight pause. "He used to be much... smoother. He used to not be this desperate."

"He got old," he said. "We all did."
