TM #248 Would you make a good spy?

“What are you doing Mr. Frodo?”

“Shhh”

I clapped my hand over Sam’s mouth and shook my head asking his silence when he started to ask what I was doing sitting under the gooseberry bush near Bilbo’s window. Gandalf and Balin had made a surprise visit to my Unkle’s home and this was the best place to get news from Mirkwood and beyond. I had discovered the hollow in the brush by following a squirrel that had gotten away from me weeks before. The bush combined with the intertwined grapevines and ivy made for an almost secluded retreat. Though the ivy was troublesome at times, ‘specially when it was the kind that had three leaves.

I suppose I could have asked to sit in with the conversation, but what would have been the fun in that? From here I could learn all that there was to know without being looked down upon as being “too young” for such things. Was it my fault I was smaller than most tween-aged hobbits and felt older than my age? Not that age mattered here under Bilbo’s windows.

A few minutes of avid listening and Sam was entranced at the conversation as well. Balin was speaking of a meeting between Dain and Thranduil and was telling how they were working together against some sort of messenger. It really wasn’t the topic of conversation that was so interesting.. [at least for me]

It was the fact that Bilbo and Gandalf would never know…
Drat the sudden itching that seems to have sprung up over night.
They would never know; that I could hear them.
