TM#245 My first memory

I remember.

FROD- I looked at the page with another childish glare and crumbled yet another sheet of paper when the ink blotch blurred out the entire O that I was striving to make. The sound of a chuckle behind me made the glare disappear into a smile. “Did you see! I almost made it all the way through this time Unkle Bilbo!” The frustration that I had moments ago was no longer present.

“You did indeed, my dear boy. Are you sure you want to continue the lesson or wait a little longer..” The fingers ruffled through my auburn curls

I dipped the feathered quill into the ink well and with the ardency of a four-year old I shook my head scattering ink along with the shaking. “No! Cousin Lotho is learning to write his name, and I think I can do it better then he can.” The fact that Lotho was a whole four years older than I didn’t matter one inkling.

FR-

With an undiminished will I stuck my tongue out the side of my lip in a steadying concentrated look and scratched the letters onto the paper again. I liked the sound of that. It was like a branch scraping on a window on a rainy day. Rainy days were the best cause Mum and Da would leave me with Bilbo and go to the Green Dragon for the afternoon..

OD-

Now if I could keep the ink from splattering and make the letters look just like Bilbo’s. I looked down at the page with a critical eye. The lines weren’t as bold and sure as Bilbo’s and looked rather thin but the letters were there. It made my smile broaden.

-O

“Now the last part of it.” Lotho hadn’t yet gotten passed his first name and I wanted to really show him up this time. I may be smaller than him but.. I was going! To be better! And if learning to write my name got me to hear more stories from Unkle Bilbo than Lotho did. Well then I would keep learning from him.

“Tell me about the time you..” it was a familiar invitation to hear the story about how Unkle Bilbo nearly pick-pocketed a trio of ‘real!trolls.’ The smell of pipe in the air told me was getting ready to do just that. BA- oh.. I just learned a lesson.. G’s were almost as hard as an O to write. Bilbo would start the story the same way, leaving me to concentrate for about five more minutes on my lettering. I was going to write my name.

And make my Unkle proud!
