We bring down Christmas decorations around this time every year, and every year we find a letter from our past selves addressed to our "future selves." That's because every year after Christmas, but before new years we reflect on our year, think about the coming year, and write a letter to our self based on that reflection. We talk about what we anticipate, what we're worried about, movies we can't wait to see, resolutions to problems we were hoping to solve, and stuff like that. Then we hide the letter in the Christmas decorations, knowing we'll find them next year around Thanksgiving when we bring them down again.
We write out letters fast, without committing too much thought, so that way we will have forgotten all about what exactly we wrote the next year. It's always interesting to hear what was on our mind, and too see whats changed.
This years letter from my past self was pretty amazing. Last December I got laid off, and Christy was pregnant. It made me smile though, because I found a job within a week of writing the letter, and the pregnancy went fine. I was worried and stressed for nothing. This is something I've been doing for over a decade now, and Christy has gotten in on the act. I've decided this will be our family tradition, and Gabrielle will start talking to her future self too as soon as she's cognitively aware enough to do so.
This and watching Diehard (my favorite Christmas movie) are our only Christmas traditions. And I recommend it. The Diehard one too, cuz it's a great movie.
