Above is a question I have had to answer for my 7 year old, which leads into the discussion about how phones have changed so much in my 35 years. No more rotary phones, cordless phones are all you see any more, and some folks live completely without a landline at all and rely solely on a cell.
I am not one of the technologically advanced. I only want a simple cell phone. I know my phone can text and take pictures, but do not rely upon me to know how to make it do those things. Anyway, the other day, J and I got into a discussion because someone at his office asked him why he had a landline. Of course, this person was in their early/mid-20s. When I was in college, cell phones were not an option, so everyone had a landline and your phone number changed every year. Now, as I understand it, most college kids just use their cell. I understand the practical appeal of this, but I also can't see getting rid of my landline. J and I were trying to come up with the reasons why -- having more than one speaker on the phone (extensions), not having to carry a phone with you everywhere in the house (which, with 3 kids, is a huge benefit), having a back-up if your cell phone is lost or dies, or whatever, and, finally, the 911 locator benefits (again, with kids, not a bad idea). But, it started me wondering if we are really old-fashioned. Therefore, a brief poll for the few of you reading:
