Title: For
lemmealone's 'Halfway Home'
Pairing: Jared/Jensen
Rating: Two that are G-rated; One that's NC-17
Notes: On the day the artists were to choose a prompt, several story summaries caught my eye, but this one, especially, jumped out at me:
Halfway Home
Genre/Pairing: RPS Au, Jared/Jensen
Summary: Jared has lost his wife and Jensen has lost his mind. They meet in a Kansas psychiatric facility and hit it off, and when they are both released they decide to go on a road trip together to Texas. On the way they get to know each other a lot better; Jared comes to terms with his loss and discovers the secret of Jensen's madness. In the end they're both okay, as long as they keep driving.
When the author sent me her story draft, I read it in almost one sitting. It was a Thursday night and I actually found myself reluctant to stop reading long enough to go watch that night's SPN, and we weren't even in reruns then -- the story is just that good! It has some wonderfully humorous bits, but there's some heartbreak in there, too. Her use of minor characters and the weaving of reality and fiction is awesome (see if you can spot all the references!) and there's a bit near the end that I'm still thinking about, but I won't spoil anyone by mentioning it here.
So, go! Read! Enjoy! Here's the artwork I came up with. The thumbnail links to the bookcover and two illustrations, one of which is NOT WORKSAFE, so use caution clicking.
First, I wanted to make a bookcover. I love bookcover art and when I'm browsing for some new reading, the cover really does influence me as far as which book I choose. A beautiful cover will guarantee that I at least pick the book up and read the summary. So, I don't know that *I* managed to accomplish all that, but that was my goal anyway...to make a pretty cover that catches the eye and does justice to the author's wonderful story.
Then, there was this scene that I especially wanted to illustrate. I'm not happy with the way their heads look at all (this is why I should stay away from photo manipulation), but such as it is:
I'm always reluctant to scale artwork down for posting because so much is lost, so here's a link to the full-size piece for those that want to see the textures and facial expressions in greater detail.
This image is 325.4KB so dial-up users beware! And finally, the NC-17 image - also not happy at all with Jensen's head/neck area in this one. I've edited it a couple of times and it's still not right:
And the full-size image of the hotel scene for those that want the up close and personal view. For those interested in this sort of thing, all of these pieces were created using a variety of methods/tools: Photoshop, Corel Painter, and Poser programs were used and the images were created with an assortment of filters, digital hand painting, and photo manipulation.
