This was wonderful. Gathered friends, food, a birthday party somehow drawn together in the midst of the chaos of Goblin City and the outer labyrinths. Here, Tamaki found happiness. He was making a difference, he was making friends and somehow carrying on despite...

Despite...

Well, there was no need to think on that. For now, there was nothing he could do. Thinking on how he missed them, how he had wanted to spend this day, this very important occasion with them would do him no good. His family, his dearest friends, his home, his Haruhi. No, it would be selfish to linger on those thoughts. Everyone had put so much effort into this event on his behalf, and no matter how his heart ached, at the very least Tamaki was anything but alone. He owed them his happiness, a smile in thanks. Thoughts on those he missed most of all could wait until he was alone.

It was funny a little. As Tamaki moved from guest to guest, he couldn't help a giggle. A chuckle. He was a liar. Here they thought he was such a wonderful young gentlemen. They had no idea. With every smiling face he passed, the laugh grew. They didn't know him at all! So simple, really. What you show on the outside is the real you, right? Of course it was! Of course it was. He was happy, he was so happy and all he wanted was to share that happiness. Smile, Tamaki, smile now. Everyone's watching, after all. You don't want to disappoint them. You don't want your dirty little secret to seep through and steal away their giggles. Those fools. Those sheep. A few kind words was all it took.

No, they were his friends! His dear, close friends. He finally stopped in front of Xion who had arranged the whole surprise party for him. His newly promoted Jr Host-to-official Host. Already replacing them. Already moving on. Who might he call mommy now? Spoiled, so spoiled, can't even live a month without his make believe family before replacing each with a new one.

His smile shook a bit in the corners of his lips. Replace them all. What did people matter anyway? They always leave. Get sick. Take and manipulate. Put on a show.

Like a clown.

Like that happy clown and the man in his funny scarves. What had he said? Oh well, what did it even matter? Tamaki reached out and patted Xion's head, his grin still wide and growing wider. Choose, Tamaki. Choose. Give up the self, be an entertainer, catering only to the happiness of others. Give. Give and give till there was nothing left. Till there was no clear feelings left but joy and happiness and joy and joy. Or be honest. Show them, don't be scared now. Sadness, loneliness, pain, let it flood forth. Let them know how running from truth works. Playing pretend. Smiles now. No need to disappoint.

The lights were on, the curtain up. Remember your lines.

“I want to thank everyone for coming,” Tamaki shouted over the mummers. “I can't express how much this means to me.”

Liar. This is nothing compared to what would have happened at home. They don't compare to them. It's so easy to lie.

“I want to offer a special thank you to Xion.”

She looks like Haruhi. So easy to replace. You only like her because they're almost identical. So shallow. So disgusting. All that noise about caring for a person's heart. Replaced her at the drop of a hat. Wonder if she knows that's the only reason why. Think she can see it there in your eyes, Tamaki? She probably wouldn't even care. Simple girl.

He patted Xion's head again, a little harder than the first time. “Back at my home, this year marks a time when a boy begins to move into adulthood.” When his hand rested on her head, his fingers entwined in her hair. Still, his tone and smile remained the same. “I'm so glad that I could share this occasion with all of you.”

Fingers tightened until he had a firm grip. No. Xion liked him for his looks. Everyone liked him as children like their toys. He was just a possession, a wind up toy, a clown for their enjoyment in this hell hole! They didn't know him. They weren't his friends. His friends were gone. Further away from him as west is to east. He may be a liar, but this girl and the rest. They were the real fakers here.

Slowly, Tamaki leaned closer to Xion, tilting her head up by pulling her hair back. “Are you having fun, Xion? I know I am. You're the best friend I could ask for. You really, truly spoil me. What would I do with out you?”

That said, he tossed her to the ground. “The birthday entertainment's just begun, everyone! We're going to have a lot of fun! After all, I owe so much to all of you. You've made my new life here so wonderful that I've almost forgotten my last one!”

A knife in a nearby roasted chicken was quickly snatched up and in one swift motion, Tamaki jumped up onto the table. “Thank you for making that switch so easy! You all are such great friends~ So! I promise from now on, we're going to be so happy. What? Won't you all smile?”

He kicked the food from the table. “I'll be the best happy little clown I can be. Just smile, c'mon everyone, laugh!”
