The term is Companion.

I take it these are the observations. A group of children tossing insults and foul language.

Basically, yeah. We mostly just ignore them.

I can see why.

Don't let them get to you. No one's judging you based on these idiots. It's totally fine.

I can't take something like this too seriously, don't worry about that. It sounds like school children tossing insults.

That'd be them. Not bad enough that we're locked in a cage, but the next cage over is a bunch of chimpanzees who occasionally throw excrement.

Charming. You would think they would find a better use for their creativity.

According to the real veterans, the observations used to be professional psychiatric observations. Just another sign of how close this place is to falling apart.

The inmates are running the asylum. It adds even more urgency to the idea of leaving, before they go completely mad and destroy themselves along with us.

Oh, they're completely mad. And they're not running anything. Val is running the asylum.

They're just in another cage. The consortium keeps their families hostage, keeps them here and doing whatever they want them to.

[She shakes her head.]

Escape seems more and more unlikely the more I learn.

How about this, then? I personally know a guy in here who doesn't need to breathe, can fly through space and teleport pretty much anywhere he wants in the universe. Once he gets his collar off, we're pretty much golden even if we can't set up some kind of distress signal. That, and the consortium hasn't shown any kind of power close to what Jack has, except for the collars.

Nothing is as hopeless as it seems on the surface, Inara.

Giving up would help no one, I know that. That doesn't change the fact that the odds seem very long. Not that we have much to lose.

We're still breathing.

And I don't like calculating odds.

True. And that is enough to continue fighting.

They'll go through a list of insults and insinuations and stick with the ones you respond the most to.
