I have a feeling I'll be writing alot of these...and look, no angst!
Henry/Rose ficlet - am proud of it.
The snow fell steadily, the flakes falling on the black woollen coat he wore, turning it steadily white. The hat he wore was pulled low over his eyes but he still watched the white flakes dancing slowly towards the ground with a small smile on his face. There was a chill in the air, the wind ripping through his body but he paid it no heed, it had been a long time since he had seen snow that he had almost forgotten what it looked like, he had almost forgotten just how beautiful the world could look like this in all it’s untouched, pure glory.
He took in a deep breath, letting it out slowly and watching the warm steam drift upwards into the sky that was as black as pitch, tiny pinpricks of light shining up above, the only witness to him standing there on a cool December night that was close to Christmas. He had been here now for 5 years and things had settled into a routine, well as much of a routine as you can have with a 1 year old child and a job at Torchwood. A child… he actually had a child, the thought still made him breathless with happiness, never in his many years did he ever think he would father a child, nor could he ever have imagined he’d ever meet someone like Rose.
His eyes remained fixed on the sky and the snow, watching his gentle breaths and letting his mind tick over idly. His mind was calm, Edward hadn’t been seen in a while. Torchwood had managed, not totally successfully but enough, to control him to some extent. With the birth of their son Henry had been overly protective of him, his thoughts about what Hyde was capable of had driven him to work day and night for more months than he could count before finally he made a breakthrough. The injections at the start of each week kept Hyde subdued enough for Henry to function reasonably normally.
A soft cough from behind him made him startle, so lost in his own thoughts that he wasn’t aware of anything else until that moment. He turned around, knowing full well who it would be, a smile forming before he met eyes with her.
“Hey” she moved forward an inch, her teeth chattering from the cold. She only seemed to be dressed in her ever present hooded jacket.
“You’ll freeze to death” he said simply, closing the gap between them and opening the buttons of his coat wrapped her into a hug, kissing her hair and inhaling her scent.
“What are you doing out here?” her voice was concerned even as she buried her head into his chest, wrapping her arms around his body underneath his coat.
“M’thinking”
“’Bout what?” her voice muffled against the cloth of his shirt, sending heat upwards and making him shiver.
“Everything….nothing. Where’s John?”
“Mum has him, she insisted I come find you so you could do, in her words ‘your fatherly duties‘” she laughed softly “He needs bathing and putting to bed.”
Henry nodded, laughing, but made no attempt to move, he was content here in this moment with Rose and the snow, even though the temperature had dropped even further. He yawned widely, resting his head on top of hers, watching the snow hit her hair.
The silence stretched out between them, but it wasn’t an uneasy one. Every since the day they met they spent a long time silent in each others presence, words weren’t needed, they were never needed. This connection between them had simply got deeper the more time had worn on and with just one look they could tell what the other wanted, or needed, and sometimes not even with that. His breathing remained slow as the snow danced around them.
After a while, he lifted his head, nodding; “Come on then, we’d better go in so I can do my fatherly duties, and get you warm else your mother will start threatening me again.” he smiled, laughing as Rose raised her eyebrow. They manoeuvred until he his arm around her, her arm slipping under his coat again, pulling him closer to her and together they began to walk back to the house.
“I do love you…” he murmured, turning and placing a kiss upon her lips.
“I know…” she smiled, returning his kiss. “I love you too”
He knew that she meant it.
