D'you get scared to feel so much?
To let somebody touch you?
So hot. So cold. So far out of control.
Hard to come by, and harder to hold.'
--More, Sisters of Mercy
The silence was absolute as his eyelids fluttered open. He strained his ears simply to hear her breathing and smiled when he did so, her light snores comforting to him. He looked downwards slowly, his eyesight better in the dark than maybe it should have been, his eyes wandering over her slight but strong form. Her hair splayed out haphazardly over his chest and she looked so peaceful.
His arms were still wrapped around her, he would never let her go unless she wanted him too, he had made a promise after all. Her arms wrapped around him too, almost possessively and the thought made his heart swell with love for her. He hadn’t felt like this, so powerful and yet so needy in so long; he was happy, for the first time in a long time he was happy and content and it was all thanks to the woman in his arms.
He smiled down and stroked her hair lightly enough that she wouldn’t stir. Neither of them got proper sleep anyway, so he always left her asleep as she did him, content to just hold each other when the nightmares came. It hadn’t been easy, for the both of them. He had had to get used to a new time, she had had to get to used to the idea that her Doctor wasn’t coming back and that Henry was here for her, that he would never let her fall no matter what happened. He had had to get used to the fact that she wasn’t going anywhere either, that she wouldn’t leave him no matter what Edward tried to do. That in itself was a miracle.
So in each other they had found a comfort against the darkness that surrounded them.
He remembered when they had told Pete, or rather he had come to know. Although they were very careful to try and hide it at work when they met there was something in the air between them that you would have to be blind or deaf of both not to notice. Pete had given them his blessing with no more than a smile and a nod and Henry couldn’t help but expect much more than that, caution maybe to his daughter. But she knew now what she was getting into, it was pretty hard not too. When Pete’s eyes had met his however, even through the wide smile his eyes said; ‘You hurt my daughter and I will make you regret it for the rest of your natural life, and beyond’ - Henry didn’t doubt that for a moment.
He wasn’t going to pretend that he wasn’t scared - he was, even when she tried to tell him not to worry too much, to just let things happen because he couldn’t change them. But she could see it in her eyes too, the fear, the uncertainty that maybe, just maybe… but scared was good, scared made you realise that you were still alive.
Both of them needed that more than anything.
